There have been significant changes in the education system of India. On 29 July, the HRD Ministry of India introduced the National Education Policy 2020 for India

The main of the national education policy is to rejuvenate the entire education system and the upbringing and training of the students in the school. The aim of the New National Education Policy is to create an education system that caters to the requirements of the present generation while also staying on the grounds with the traditions. The purpose of the New National Education Policy is to transform the nation sustainably and create knowledgable by providing quality education for all.

Significant Highlights of New National Education Policy: In schools 

Pre-primary education system

The new national education system that is proposed to be incorporated is likely to universalize the education for the students and make foundational literacy and numeracy for every student and children up to 18 years of age. 

No distinction between the education streams

The new policy features flexibility and choice to choose and select the subjects from the various stream and customize the study across various subjects including arts, humanities, science, and other additional subjects.

Incorporating education in local language/ mother language:

 Since children earn language at the early stage of their childhood, the new policy includes learning in any three linguistic languages. 

Vocational based education

The new policy strives to implement internships from class 6. 

The new 5+3+3+4 curriculum structure

Traditionally, education pertained to a 10+2 system and is now replaced by the 5+3+3+4 circular structure in which comprises of different stages; from 3-8 years is the foundational stage, 8-11 is the preparatory stage, 11-14 is the middle school and 14-18 is the secondary school. The focus is to bring the crucial age of child’s mental and physical development which is within the age of 3-6 years under the focus school curriculum

Tests of classes 10 and 12

The tests are made comparatively easier for the class 10 and 12 board exams that test the competency of the students rather than memorized fact and also makes it easier for the students to retake once. 

360 holistic Progress Report 

The reforms in the educational policy have introduced the 360-degree holistic progress report that helps to track and check over the student’s overall progress and development in different areas of training and progressive fields.

National Curriculum for Teacher Education

It is the newly formulated educational system for the teacher’s education board which has been drafted in consultation with the National Council of Educational Research and Training to train for teacher’s education.

Physical activity 

All the students at a different levels of the organization are encouraged to participate and engage in regular periods and training. The students are planned out to have regular periods and the opportunity to participate in the activity. 

Introduction of Rashtriya Shiksha Aayog 

The new policy has introduced a new apex body which will be headed by the Prime Minister of India. The main purpose of setting up this apex body id to make sure that the rules and regulations of the policy are updated, regulated, and revised to fulfill the educational vision of India.

Key highlights in the overall education system

  • While pursuing a degree, the students will be awarded a certificate in the first year, a diploma in the second year, and a degree at the end of the year. 
  • The degree will be recorded in credits, which will be saved digitally, this will enable the students to resume the course in case of dropout without taking up admission. 
  • MPhil courses are proposed to be discounted, with work opportunities available for the student eyeing to do a job. 
  • Courses are now targeted to multidisciplinary. 
  • The National Testing Agency has now incorporated a high-level aptitude test and common specialized subjects for university entrance examinations. 

School examinations

  • The students of Grade 3, 5, and 8 test the basic learning outcomes of the child, which is expected to attain real-life situations 
  • The board exams of 10 and 12, are based more on the applicability of the subjects rather than imitating the facts. 
  • The progressive card is expected to be offered which provides a holistic and full assessment of the development and progress of the child in all the necessary fields.
